Determine Your Investment Strategy

Message from the Northern Illinois Retirement Fund:

The Board of Trustees of the Northern Illinois Retirement Fund, (your defined contribution plan) recognize that in order for you to make appropriate decisions with regard to this plan, you need to determine your investment strategy, which takes into consideration your short-term and long-term goals and your tolerance for risk. With that in mind, the Trustees also recognize that you could better prepare for retirement if you determine your investment strategy as soon as possible. Listed below is Morningstar’s Risk Profiler Quiz. If you do not know which investment strategy is right for you, here’s an easy way to find out.

Answer these questions by circling the choice you most agree with. Then add up the points given for each of your choices to see which investment strategy you should follow…and you’ll be on your way!

SECTION 3:        YOUR INVESTMENT STRATEGY

Add up your points from Questions 2-9.

Based on this “investment strategy”, you’re ready to consider how to divide your investments among the different asset classes.  For sample allocation portfolios, log on to The Journey at www.massmutual.com/retire .  From The Journey, you can also review all the investment options your plan offers within each asset class.

After you have determined your investment strategy, you can decide which of the asset classes you wish your future contributions and existing balance to be invested.

The “Moderate” portfolio is appropriate for an investor who wants to accumulate enough money to beat inflation but with moderate exposure to risk.  The following example of a “moderate” investment strategy shows you that 40% of assets should be invested in the Short-Term Stable Value Guaranteed Fund.  60% of the assets would be diversified between the six (6) Funds listed:

MORNINGSTAR “MODERATE” CUSTOM PORTFOLIO ASSET ALLOCATION
Asset Class Investment
Cash   40%    Short Term Stable Value  40%
SF Guaranteed   40%    Stock   60%
Large Cap Value   12%    MM Value Equity (Fidelity)             12%
Large Cap Core 13%    MM Indexed Equity 13%
Large Cap Growth 14%    Cap Appr (Oppenheimer) 14%
Small/Mid Cap Value 6%    MM Focused Val (Harris) 6%
Small/Mid Cap Growth 6%    Small/Mid Cap Growth 6%
International/Global 9%    MM Overseas (Am Cent/Harris) 9%

This asset mix can be implemented using the Custom Portfolio provided by MassMutual.  MassMutual categorizes the investment line-up and allocates the specific percentage to Morningstar’s recommended asset mix.

We encourage you to take the time necessary to complete this quiz and allocate your assets according to your investment strategy and risk tolerance.
